WHAT WE DO

Empower Students

Students work together and foster teamwork skills. Hands-on learning improves their cognitive understanding of the subject material and social skills. Through group activities, students learn how to find solutions diplomatically, delegate, and work as part of a team.

Hands-on Learning

We strive to teach learning through experience or learning through doing. Hands-on learning can lead to increased retention of the material and is a way for students to practice developing their problem-solving skills.

Youth Development

Our goal is to develop children along with educating their families so that youth are empowered to reach their full potential. We look to build skills, assets, and competencies; foster healthy relationships; strengthen the environment; and transform systems.

HOW WE DO IT

Southport Maritime teaches kids STEM skills through the building of small wooden boats over a 40-hour class and then boating skills when they launch the boats and row them in the harbor. In the process they learn life-skills, teamwork, and about potential vocational options that don’t require staring at a video screen all day.

We work with children approximately 11 - 16 years old to give them a new experience. Our programs give kids the hands-on experience to measure, fit, assemble and finish a small rowing boat that they then get a chance to have an on-water experience in. For many kids, this is their  first time on the water.
